One of the most common questions we hear in career conversations is: “What am I going to do next?”
It can feel as though everyone else has a clear plan, but career direction rarely arrives as one big moment of certainty. More often, it develops gradually through experience, curiosity, conversations and exploring possibilities.
A useful starting point is simply to ask yourself: How clear am I about what I might like to do next?
You don’t need one perfect answer. Instead, think about the possibilities you have explored. How many different career pathways have you seriously considered? Do you understand the range of roles or industries that might value your skills, experiences and interests? And how confident do you feel making decisions about what comes next?
Career awareness also means beginning to connect possibilities with the real world. Try identifying three employers, organisations, sectors or types of work that interest you. Then investigate them. What attracts you to them? What kinds of roles exist? What skills do they look for? Who could you talk to to learn more?
The aim isn’t to decide the rest of your career today. It is to move from “I’m not sure what’s out there” towards “I can see some possibilities worth exploring.”
Five questions to ask yourself
- How clear am I about my preferred career direction?
- What different career pathways have I actively explored?
- Do I understand the range of roles that could value my skills and experience?
- How confident am I in making informed career decisions?
- Can I identify three employers or organisations I’d genuinely like to know more about?
Career direction isn’t necessarily about having a destination. It’s about developing enough awareness to choose your next step.
